In 2008, DBSA-Northern Virginia is piloting
a program where our members and other volunteers can be there for
patients in his or her time of need. The program sends volunteers into
Northern Virginia psychiatric hospitals to comfort patients and their loved
ones, and educate them, as well as hospital workers, about support that
is available in the community.
One of the most difficult things for a person with a mental illness to do is
reenter the community after an involuntary or voluntary hospitalization. This
is why we have partnered with other support groups in Northern Virginia to get
accurate information about groups meeting in the area and education literature
to patients and loved ones before they leave the hospital.
